Rossini’s Il Conte Ory

Two nights!

Thursday December 4, 2025

Saturday December 6, 2025

The illustrious Count Ory is at it again, with no disguise too ridiculous and no plot too audacious in his quest to seduce the women of Touraine while the townsmen are away at war.

A Rossini masterpiece, this high-flying opera is thrillingly fast-paced musically and dramatically. More commonly performed in French as Le Comte Ory, the gender-bending, bawdy humor of Il Conte Ory was considered too racy to be performed in Rossini’s native Italy in 1828. Pico Opera brings Il Conte Ory to the stage in Cambridge for an unforgettable evening of big laughs, big arias, and big ensembles. Don’t miss out on the Count’s misadventures, nor those of Isoliero and The Countess Adele to give him his just deserts!

A look back at…

In a quaint little village, peasant Nemorino hopelessly dreams of nothing more than for the beautiful and sharp-witted farm owner, Adina, to notice his love and admiration. When a quack doctor, Dulcamara, comes to town selling a potion for every ailment, Nemorino asks for a remedy for Adina’s indifference. The charlatan takes what little Nemorino has in return for his “Elixir of Love”—in reality, a cheap bottle of wine.  Nemorino, drunk on hope and an excess of vino, stumbles around content, unconcerned, and convinced Adina will fall for him within a few days. Suddenly neglected, Adina finds herself unexpectedly troubled, prompting her to vie to get Nemorino’s attention back by entertaining the advances of a handsome but noxious soldier, Belcore. So ensures chaos!

A man with dark, slightly scruffy hair and wearing a dark vest over a light shirt is singing passionately with his mouth open, holding a small bottle of red liquid. A woman with long, reddish hair and a floral hair accessory is facing him, wearing a vintage-style white dress with lace and floral details, standing outdoors against a stone wall.
A theatrical cast dressed in historical costumes performing on stage, with a man in a red top hat and elaborate coat holding an object, surrounded by a group of diverse actors in period clothing, with a stone wall background and a sign that reads 'Osteria'.

Featuring luscious melodies and crowd favorite arias (Una furtiva lagrima, Prendi, and more), you won’t want to miss this hilarious tale where innocent love ultimately conquers even the coldest of hearts.
